This 6-session professional development seminar is intended for psychotherapists and counsellors who want to further their understanding and refine their therapeutic skills in providing a Developmentally-based, Relationally-focused Integrative Psychotherapy for their clients. We will focus on the methods of Inquiry, Attunement, and Involvement, client’s unconscious relational patterns, and how transference is an expression of what the client needs in a therapeutic relationship. We will also explore the psychotherapist’s reactive and responsive countertransference and how to make effective use of the therapist’s internal sensations and fantasies. In these 6 sessions (3-hours each session) there may be assigned readings and group discussions that may address the following topics:
> the centrality of an attuned therapeutic relationship;
> therapeutic attunement, involvement and presence;
> the importance of a sustained phenomenological inquiry; > the effective use of developmental inquiry;
> responding to the client’s Relational-needs;
> working with archaic self-stabilization and self-regulation;
> reactive and responsive countertransference and the effective use of the therapist’s Self
> when and how to use behavioural or cognitive interventions and/or supportive age regression.
Participants are expected to present cases from their own therapeutic practice. These may include either formal presentations or spontaneous therapy vignettes that have been stimulated by the readings and discussions. Participation in these case discussions requires that each person makes an ethical commitment to client confidentiality.
