Transference and Countertransference:
a Non-pathological Perspective
Richard G. Erskine & Amaia Mauriz-Etxabe
Sponsored by BIOS Institute for Integrative Psychotherapy Training, Bilbao, Spain
Transference and countertransference are essential means of communi-cation in psychotherapy. Through lecture, case discussion, and live ther-apy demonstrations this 5-day works will present several ways to under-stand transference and countertransference dynamics. We will explore the formation of unconscious relational patterns, how transference is the client’s unconscious way of telling a previously non-verbalized story, how to identify and respond to the several types of transference, and how to engage the client in a healing relationship. We help participants to identi-fy their reactive countertransference as well and how to enhance their therapeutically beneficial responsive countertransference. We will discuss the therapeutic advantages of a developmental perspective, how to en-gage the Child ego states in dialogue, the use of therapeutic inference, as well as how to refine our personal capacity for attunement and presence.
Through lecture, case discussion, and live therapy demonstrations this 5-day workshop will present the therapeutic philosophy and various meth-ods of a developmentally-based, relationally-focused Integrative Psycho-therapy. This experiential workshop is for mental health professionals who want to apply theory into clinical practice and to enhance their effective-ness through identifying aspects of their own contact interruption, life script, and countertransference. Richard and/or Amaia will do live thera-py with some of the members of the group. They will then discuss the theory and methods used in the live therapy.
